MANILA, Philippines—The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday launched a sidewalk improvement project along C5 road in Pasig City that will use bricks made of recycled materials.
In a statement, the MMDA said the initiative seeks to repair and rehabilitate sidewalks from Ortigas Avenue to Bagong Ilog.
The existing sidewalks, which are made of traditional impervious concrete, will be replaced with a “permeable pavement” that includes stormwater detention tanks when possible.

According to the MMDA, the use of permeable pavement allows rainwater to pass through and helps retain water in the soil.

The new sidewalks will be made of crushed recycled glass and hard plastics that were collected from rivers, which, the MMDA said, will help enhance drainage while being able to withstand heavy loads and harsh weather.
Bricks made from the MMDA’s integrated solid waste management processing facility in the Vitas Pumping Station at Tondo, Manila, will also be used for the project.
