A24‘s highest grossing movie ever, Backrooms, is getting an extended cut as early as this Friday. The Kane Parsons directed movie based on the viral IP will have 16 minutes of brand-new footage and will be freshly titled as Backrooms: Everything Must Go.
The new cut will have more lore, and more Easter eggs for fans.
Backrooms stars Oscar nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve as well as Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell. The movie was written by Will Soodik based on Parsons’ series.
Backrooms was an unexpected box office sensation this summer with a current running global cume of $331M. The movie which was burbling to a $20M-$30M+ domestic opening, exploded to an $81.4M debut, and outgrossed such pre-planned summer tentpoles as Star Wars: Mandalorian and Grogu ($175.4M domestic, $327.4M WW), both at the North American B.O. with $184.1M and worldwide.
In Backrooms, a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom. The store’s owner (Ejiofor) gets lost within this maze, only to be pursued by his therapist who is trying to rescue him (Reinsve).
A sequel is already brewing for the Blumhouse/21 Laps/Chernin Entertainment co-production.
