Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the National Food Bank Initiative in Jigawa State, saying no child should die of hunger or malnutrition.
Speaking during her official visit to the state, she said the programme was designed to improve nutrition among pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under six.
She said the initiative focuses on preventing malnutrition by providing nutritious food to vulnerable groups through food banks located near primary healthcare centres.
She said President Bola Tinubu directed her to support efforts to tackle poor nutrition across the country.
The First Lady disclosed that the Dangote Group had donated food items worth N20 billion to the initiative, while the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) is funding the construction of food bank facilities nationwide at a cost of N30 billion.
She added that she personally contributed N500 million to the programme.
During the visit, Senator Tinubu also commissioned the Oluremi Tinubu Clinics, a healthcare facility built with the support of the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
She said the hospital would improve access to quality healthcare for residents of Hadejia and neighbouring communities.
The First Lady also inaugurated the Hadejia-Garun Gabas Road, the Remi Tinubu Road in Gandun Sarki, inspected the NITDA FutureMap Centre and visited the Gandun Sarki Primary Healthcare Centre.
She commended Governor Umar Namadi and his wife, Hajiya Hadiza, for supporting healthcare, nutrition and the Renewed Hope Initiative in the state.
