The rightwing League party on Tuesday
dropped calls for the 'remigration' of a man accused of killing
a pizzamaker in Reggio Emilia after the alleged murderer turned
out to be Italian and not a migrant as had initially been
reported on social media.
The suspect, a 42-year-old Reggio man with drug addiction and
mental issues, allegedly stabbed to death 67-year-old pizzamaker
Raffaele Stipa Monday evening after his demand for an umpteenth
free pizza was turned down.
The local chapter of the League immediately called for the
reportedly foreign man to become a candidate for remigration, a
deportation policy even for settled migrants which has been
pushed lately by far-right general-turned politician Roberto
Vannacci, a former League deputy leader who has set up his own
radical rightist party.
The calls ended when the suspect was identified as an Italian.
League leader Matteo Salvini, who called for remigraton long
before Vannacci turned it into a hot-button issue, has said he
is "fed up" of hearing about his former deputy, who has
overtaken him in the polls.
