Alexandra Eala advanced to the second round of Wimbledon after a straight-sets win over Mexico’s Renata Zarazua on June 30.
She will face Australia’s Maya Joint in a rematch of last year’s finals at the Eastbourne Open, which Joint won in three sets.
Eala, 21, defeated Zarazua, 28, by converting four of 17 break point opportunities for a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Zarazua had two of those in the whole match but converted neither. She is currently ranked No. 75 in singles by the WTA.
No Alex Eala vs. Serena Williams in Wimbledon
In their only previous meeting in August 2024, Zarazua won in three sets in the Cary Tennis Classic, a hard-court tournament in North Carolina. She was the tournament’s second seed and eventually reached the finals.
For her first appearance in Wimbledon’s second round, Eala won’t get a dream match against Williams, who returned to competitive tennis after a four-year break.
Joint needed three sets to defeat Serena Williams in Wimbledon’s round of 128. She nearly won it in the second set, but the former Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) No. 1 got ahead of her in the tie-break.
The Australian prevailed, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Among those advancing to the second round are Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Jelena Swiatek, Janice Tjen, Naomi Osaka, Karolina Muchova, Jessica Pegula, and former champion Barbora Krejcikova, who stopped Eala’s campaign in the first round last year.
Eala is also competing in women’s doubles this year with Nikola Bartunkova, and their first-round match will be against Sofia Kenin and Jelena Ostapenko.
