Crash closes SH3 through Awakino Gorge

State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge is closed following a crash.

The road is closed between Piopio and Awakino.

The crash occurred north of the major slip site.

Emergency services are on site and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Massive slips closed the gorge on 18 April and it reopened in May, with traffic restrictions.

The area was also closed for more than a day on 9 June after fresh land movements at the site of a significant slip.

The closure enabled geotechnical site assessments to be carried out, the NZ Transport Agency said.
