The newly registered Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA) has unveiled an ambitious reform agenda, advocating a return to a parliamentary system of government, constitutional restructuring, and true federalism as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s governance and development challenges.
Daily Trust reports that the Federal High Court in Abuja had recently ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA) alongside seven others as political parties in Nigeria.
Speaking at the party’s public unveiling in Abuja yesterday, the National Chairman of the CDA, Tamunotonye Samuel Inioribo, said Nigeria’s current challenges stem largely from an over-centralised governance structure that concentrates power at the centre while limiting the capacity of states and local communities to develop.
He described the official launch of the party as the beginning of “a nation-building chapter” following the conclusion of legal disputes over its registration.
Inioribo said the party was founded on principles rather than personalities and would pursue far-reaching constitutional and governance reforms aimed at building a more inclusive and efficient federation.
Central to the party’s proposals is the replacement of Nigeria’s presidential system with a mixed parliamentary model featuring a ceremonial President as Head of State and an elected Prime Minister as Head of Government accountable to Parliament.
He also proposed the adoption of a mixed member proportional representation electoral system to reduce winner-takes-all politics, encourage coalition building and ensure that every vote counts.
The party also called for true federalism and devolution of powers through comprehensive constitutional reforms.
According to him, the CDA supports asymmetrical federalism that allows federating units to develop according to their unique capacities and resources while preserving national unity and protecting minority rights.
