The chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon. Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, has disclosed that arrangements have been concluded to procure truckloads of fertiliser and other farm inputs for distribution to rural farmers across the council’s 10 wards.
Shekwolo made this known on Monday while receiving groups and associations of farmers who paid him a courtesy visit at his office.
He said the council was also setting up a committee comprising leaders of farmers from various rural communities to ensure the transparent and equitable distribution of the fertiliser and other farm inputs.
According to him, agriculture remains one of the core priorities of his administration, given Kuje Area Council’s strategic role as one of the food-producing hubs of the FCT.
He explained that the planned distribution of fertiliser and farm inputs forms part of the council’s efforts to encourage farming, boost agricultural productivity and address food insecurity across the area.
“Even before now, we have been aware of the challenges facing our rural farmers, especially the lack of access to fertiliser and other farm inputs such as agrochemicals and sprayers, as well as the poor road network, which makes it difficult to transport farm produce to markets during harvest,” he said.
The council chairman further disclosed that arrangements had been made to procure tractors, which would be hired to large-scale farmers at subsidised rates to enable them to cultivate more farmland and increase production.
Shekwolo also assured the farmers that the council would embark on the rehabilitation and opening of rural roads to ease the transportation of agricultural produce and stimulate economic activities across the area.
He commended the farmers’ groups for identifying the challenges confronting the agricultural sector and pledged his administration’s commitment to addressing them through targeted interventions.
