The Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed, has dismissed reports of an emerging insurgent group known as “Sai Malam,” describing them as false and politically motivated.
Ahmed spoke on Tuesday in Abuja when he led a delegation of state government officials on a visit to the headquarters of Media Trust Group.
He said the reports were the handiwork of political opponents seeking to spread misinformation.
“The story about ‘Sai Malam’ is completely false. Investigations by the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed that no such terrorist group exists in Kebbi State,” he said.
He said the group in question consisted of suspected cybercriminals who allegedly blackmailed wealthy individuals using information technology but were wrongly portrayed as members of a terrorist organisation.
Ahmed said the state government had invested heavily in tackling insecurity by providing logistics, vehicles, motorcycles and welfare support to the military, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, hunters and vigilante groups.
He also backed the establishment of state police, saying it would enable governors to respond more effectively to local security challenges.
“If the current policing system is not delivering the desired results, we need to consider new approaches. State police will improve response to local security issues,” he said.
Ahmed said the visit to Media Trust Group was to strengthen collaboration in projecting the achievements of the Kebbi State Government.
The Group Chief Executive Officer of Media Trust Group, Ahmed Shekarau, pledged continued collaboration with the state government, noting that the organisation now operates newspaper, television, radio and digital platforms with wider national reach.
