Parliament is exploring the introduction of a child-minding service for MPs during parliamentary sittings, with Speaker Carmelo Abela launching a consultation to assess demand for the initiative.
The move follows an appeal by PN MP Adrian Delia during his first speech of the new legislature, in which he urged the Speaker to introduce a child-minding service in Parliament.
Sharing a copy of the letter sent to MPs, Delia thanked Abela for what he described as an “immediate response” to his proposal.
“Thank you for the immediate response. I hope this initiative is now implemented without much delay,” Delia wrote.
According to the letter, Parliament is assessing the level of interest among MPs in introducing a child-minding service during parliamentary sittings, which are generally held between 3pm and 8pm.
MPs have been asked to complete a confidential questionnaire by 8th July. The responses will be used to determine whether there is sufficient demand to introduce the service and to help inform any future planning.
