Malta will donate €140,000 to support relief efforts in Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes that have left thousands dead, injured and displaced.
Foreign Affairs Minister Chris Fearne announced the donation in Parliament, saying that while Malta is a small country, it still wanted to show solidarity with Venezuela during this humanitarian crisis.
The funds will be channelled through Malta’s Official Development Assistance Fund to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
“We all believe in pluralism, liberty and solidarity,” Fearne said, noting that thousands have died, many more have been left homeless and the final death toll is still unknown.
According to the latest official figures, around 1,500 people have been confirmed dead, while 12,721 people have been displaced and at least 68,900 remain unaccounted for following the two 7.5-magnitude earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24th June.
Search and rescue efforts remain ongoing, with international teams from countries including the UK, US, France and Turkey continuing to assist in the operation as survivors are still being pulled from the rubble.
