Speaker of the House Carmelo Abela confirms Parliament could get child care service for MPs during parliamentary sittings.
The proposal is aimed at helping Members of Parliament with young children better balance their parliamentary duties and family responsibilities. Under the initiative, MPs would be able to bring their children to Parliament, where they would be looked after while sittings are taking place.
Abela said Parliament should make every effort to support MPs in balancing their responsibilities “safely and sustainably”, recognising both their political and family commitments.
To assess demand, MPs have been sent a confidential questionnaire asking whether they would make use of the service. The consultation forms part of the initial planning process, with responses due by 8th July.
The proposal follows a recent appeal by Adrian Delia, who called for a child care service to be introduced during his first speech of the new legislature. Delia later welcomed the Speaker’s swift response and expressed hope that the initiative would be implemented without unnecessary delay.
