
MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) men’s basketball team strength and conditioning coach Grant Dearns has left the country two days after a drowning incident that claimed the lives of two players, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Wednesday.
BI confirmed this to the INQUIRER when asked if Dearns had recent outbound travel records.
“Yes, he left the country,” BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval said in a Viber message.

Sandoval said that Dearns left the country last June 10 and has not returned.

“Unable to share the details lang, but if needed, we would be able to submit it to the proper authorities to help with the investigation,” Sandoval added.

The incident prompted investigations by different agencies such as Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group recommended filing a hazing complaint against Dearns, resigned head coach Thomas Anthony “Tab” Baldwin and eight other team officials and staffers.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier said that the past concept of hazing “was limited to just initiations. But, here, the team building and training activity crossed over into hazing,” adding that the “victims were exposed to a hazardous open-sea environment characterized by rip currents, strong waves and varying seabed depths.”
Dearns was also expected to appear before the NBI’s Homicide Division last Monday amid the bureau’s ongoing probe into the drowning incident. /gsg
