AWS invests $1 billion in AI unit to build agentic AI with customers

Amazon is following the leading AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic as the company's cloud unit Amazon Web Services (AWS) announces that it is investing $1 billion in a new Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) unit that will help its customers build and roll out artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

For those unaware, Forward Deployed Engineer, or an FDE, is an employee who is embedded directly within a different business to try and accelerate a technical transformation. The term coined by the defense contractor Palantir almost 10 years ago has gained prominence among software companies as they look to boost adoption by taking talent directly into clients’ facilities. OpenAI and Anthropic, announced their own FDE companies earlier this year.

Amazon, which is the top cloud provider by revenue, is the first hyperscaler to announce this kind of initiative.“We’ve had capabilities over the years, but structurally this is like getting everybody together in one business unit with a common rubric of deployment,” Francessca Vasquez, AWS’ vice president of frontier AI engineering and services, said in an interview. “It’s the first time we’re doing it in that way.”

In a blog post, AWS said that its FDE unit is a dedicated organization, backed by a $1 billion investment, to embed thousands of engineers directly with customers to co-develop and deploy agentic AI solutions at speed. It added that FDE teams operate under actual customer constraints from day one and deliver systems structured for self-sufficiency, not ongoing dependency."Our commitment does not stop with AWS engineers. The new Partner-Led Forward Deployed Engineering Motion extends that investment to our most strategic partners.

Not as a certification. Not as a training program. As a durable, embedded delivery capability inside the consulting firms our customers already rely on — the same methodology, the same production bar, operating at the same velocity," the blog post further adds.

For now the company has launched the programme with a limited set of partner. It says, "We are launching the Partner-Led FDE Motion with a limited set of partners.

As we validate the delivery model, sharpen the harness, and scale it, we will extend it to the broader partner network."

How Amazon Web Services' FDE unit will work

AWS blog post further explained how the unit will work. It says, "Partners will build ring-fenced, AWS-credentialed engineering teams with AWS support to deliver production agentic systems with AWS services. In early customer engagements, AWS engineers are deeply embedded with the partner to support the build journey.

As more of the work moves into reusable patterns, AWS support will shift to helping the partner scale their FDE practice.
