Visitors heading to Caminha for this year’s ArtBeerFest are being encouraged to venture beyond the beer tents and discover one of Portugal’s most picturesque regions through a new cultural initiative showcasing the best of Alto Minho.
Created this year, Da Espuma aos Lugares (“From the Foam to the Places”) is an independent project designed to complement the internationally renowned craft beer festival by introducing visitors to the municipality’s landscapes, communities, traditions and local businesses.
Developed by the cultural initiative Fora d’Horas in partnership with Hirundo – Associação Juvenil, and with institutional support from ArtBeerFest, the programme aims to transform a festival visit into a broader journey through the region.
Its philosophy is summed up in a simple message: “They know the foam. Now discover the places.”
The idea was inspired by a conversation with an ArtBeerFest visitor who, after exploring the surrounding countryside, remarked: “So you didn’t say you had a mountain range right next door?”
That mountain is the Serra d’Arga, one of northern Portugal’s hidden gems, known for its granite peaks, walking trails, traditional villages and rich biodiversity. It became the catalyst for a project that seeks to encourage visitors to spend more time in the municipality and experience everything the area has to offer.
Rather than remaining centred on Caminha’s historic centre, Da Espuma aos Lugares takes cultural events into the surrounding parishes, combining live music, nature, gastronomy and community experiences.
The programme began on June 26 with the traditional PIMP OUT ArtBeerFest at Casa Almeida, involving the parishes of Caminha and Vilarelho.
Next stop: Argela
Its next event takes place on July 4 at Quinta do Socalco in the parish of Argela, where visitors can enjoy an afternoon and evening of music while discovering one of the municipality’s rural landscapes. Organisers say the event is designed to encourage people to slow down, connect with nature and experience the area’s authentic character away from the festival crowds.
The first edition of Da Espuma aos Lugares includes seven events spread across the municipality, with organisers hoping to expand the concept to additional parishes after the summer.
The initiative is funded through private investment, partnerships with local businesses and logistical support from local associations, reflecting its community-led approach.
For visitors travelling to ArtBeerFest, it offers the perfect excuse to extend their stay in Alto Minho – a region celebrated for its Atlantic coastline, rolling green hills, vineyards, rivers, historic villages and exceptional gastronomy.
Whether hiking in the Serra d’Arga, discovering local artisans, tasting regional produce or enjoying live music in unique rural settings, the organisers hope visitors will leave with a deeper appreciation of the region.
“Because the goal isn’t just to create events,” they say. “It’s to create reasons to stay.”
For those planning a summer escape in northern Portugal, Da Espuma aos Lugares provides a different way to experience Caminha – one that goes beyond the festival itself and celebrates the landscapes, people and traditions that make Alto Minho one of the country’s most rewarding destinations.
