
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia welcomed 1.38 million foreign tourist arrivals in May 2026, up 5.83 percent from the same month a year earlier, according to data released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) on Wednesday.
BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Ateng Hartono said cumulative foreign tourist arrivals reached 6.07 million during the January–May 2026 period, representing a 7.68 percent increase compared with the corresponding period last year.
By country of origin, Malaysia remained the largest source of foreign visitors in May, accounting for 298,210 arrivals, or 21.58 percent of the total. Australia followed with 155,030 arrivals, or 11.22 percent, while Singapore contributed 136,740 arrivals, equivalent to 9.89 percent.
In addition to the rise in international visitor arrivals, BPS also reported continued growth in domestic travel.
Domestic tourist trips totaled 106.16 million in May 2026, an increase of 8.69 percent from the same month in 2025.Cumulatively, domestic tourist trips reached 523.22 million during the first five months of 2026, up 2.86 percent compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.
In passenger transportation, rail services recorded the highest number of departures in May, serving 46.96 million passengers, an annual increase of 4.17 percent.
Domestic sea transport also posted growth, carrying 2.66 million passengers, up 6.45 percent year on year. Ferry services transported 4.51 million passengers, marking a 16.66 percent increase from May 2025.
By contrast, domestic air passenger traffic declined 9.22 percent year on year to 4.11 million passengers. International air passenger traffic also fell 6.41 percent to 1.65 million passengers compared with the same month last year.
For freight transportation, BPS reported that the volume of cargo transported by domestic sea freight services rose 2.76 percent year on year to 42.69 million metric tons in May 2026.
