It has been 3,180 days since investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated in a car bomb attack near her home in Bidnija on 16th October 2017.
Today, one of the most significant criminal trials in Malta’s history officially begins as Yorgen Fenech goes before a jury accused of masterminding the murder.
Fenech has pleaded not guilty to charges of complicity in Caruana Galizia’s assassination and conspiracy to commit her murder.
Over the years, the case has seen multiple arrests, guilty pleas, presidential pardons, public inquiries and lengthy court proceedings. Five men have already been convicted and sentenced over their roles in the murder, while today’s proceedings focus on the man prosecutors allege orchestrated the plot.
The trial, which is expected to hear testimony from investigators, forensic experts and key witnesses over the coming weeks, marks a pivotal moment in a case that has shaped Malta’s political and judicial landscape for almost nine years.
We’ll be following the proceedings and bringing you the latest updates throughout the trial.
