A group of students from the
University of Pisa has set a new Guinness World Record by
creating the world's largest paper aeroplane.
The plane, made by hand only of paper and glue, has a wingspan
of 20.04 meters, is seven meters long, and flew for 59 meters,
breaking the record set in 2013 by the Braunschweig Institute of
Technology.
It was the result of the Icarus project involving the
university's engineering students and the science youtuber
Jakidale.
"It all started with a few paper aeroplanes thrown between
classes—as bit of a joke," said the students.
"We were convinced that, with the right approach, even a piece
of paper could become real engineering.
"Months of study, simulations, mistakes, and fresh starts
followed.
"In the end, we managed to bring a world record back to
Italy—one that had stood for 13 years".
The team that made the paper plane was made up of Filippo De
Paoli, Lorenzo Cioli, Emanuele Campinoti, Manuel Santoro,
Giovanni Chiarelli, Luca Moni, Andrea Cipriano, Martina
Cacciotti, Greta Ferrante, Gianmaria Ferrante, Jacopo Sardi,
Dario Nista, Daniele Rusconi Braga, Dario Del Carlo and Gabriele
Frediani.
