MANILA, Philippines — There is no greater gift than the chance to watch a child grow up healthy. For families raising children with congenital and acquired heart diseases, that chance often depends on timely diagnosis, access to specialized treatment, and the generosity of people willing to help shoulder the burden.
Across the Philippines, organizations such as Operation Heart Foundation, Inc. (OHFI), Heart Warriors of the Philippines, and Jaden and Friends Inc. have long worked to ensure that financial hardship does not stand in the way of lifesaving cardiac care.
Helping strengthen that mission is Jonathan M. Sterling, a British entrepreneur and philanthropist whose support has quietly expanded access to pediatric cardiac care through ₱14.5 million in donations of medical equipment, medicines, and healthcare assistance.

A foundation for healing
Rather than focusing on a single institution, Sterling has chosen to work with organizations that address different aspects of pediatric cardiac care — from early diagnosis and community outreach to surgery, recovery, and long-term patient support.

Through Operation Heart Foundation, Inc., his donation has helped children undergo life-saving cardiac procedures at the National Children’s Hospital and the Philippine Heart Center.
The foundation has supported 17 cardiac procedures, including 15 open-heart surgeries and two cardiac catheterization procedures, benefiting children from communities across the Philippines.
Sterling’s contribution also enabled the acquisition of a portable 2D echocardiography machine, external pulse generators, and essential medicines, strengthening the foundation’s ability to diagnose, monitor, and care for young patients before and after surgery.
Strengthening the circle of care
For Heart Warriors of the Philippines, the impact extends beyond individual procedures. Dedicated to helping children and adults living with congenital and acquired heart diseases, the organization provides medical information, patient and family support, financial assistance, and connections to hospitals, physicians, and donors, making treatment more accessible.

Sterling’s support has helped 887 beneficiaries receive essential medicines, medical supplies, and specialized cardiac devices used in lifesaving interventions.
It has also strengthened patient care at the Philippine Heart Center through the donation of medical equipment, including a panoramic dental X-ray system, oxygen concentrators, and cardiac closure devices that help patients prepare for surgery and improve treatment outcomes.

Distributed across nearly 40 cities and provinces, these resources have reached communities from Luzon to Mindanao, helping reduce barriers to care and ensuring that more Filipino families can access quality cardiac services closer to home.
Bringing care closer to home
For Jaden and Friends Inc., the impact is evident not only inside hospitals but also in communities where pediatric cardiologists rarely visit.
Using portable echocardiography machines and other diagnostic equipment donated by Sterling, the organization has expanded its pediatric cardiology outreach missions and supported patients receiving free services at Delos Santos Medical Center in Quezon City.
From January to June 2026, Jaden and Friends screened 660 patients through medical missions in General Santos City, Bongabon in Nueva Ecija, Mountain Province, Puerto Princesa in Palawan, and at Delos Santos Medical Center.
Patients who received free services through the hospital program also came from provinces including Masbate, Northern Samar, Ifugao, Antique, Cebu, Bicol, Zamboanga, and Laguna, demonstrating the program’s nationwide reach.
Beyond diagnosis, the organization continues to provide free maintenance medicines, including Bosentan, Sildenafil, and Bisoprolol, helping children continue treatment long after their initial consultations.
For many families, these outreach missions represent their first opportunity to consult a pediatric cardiologist without traveling hundreds of kilometers to Metro Manila.
Beyond the donation
While the figures speak to the scale of the initiatives — hundreds of patients screened, hundreds more beneficiaries assisted and lifesaving procedures made possible — the true measure of success lies elsewhere.
It is found in parents who no longer have to choose between seeking treatment and putting food on the table, in children who receive a diagnosis before it is too late, and in communities that now have greater access to specialized cardiac care.

For Sterling, philanthropy is not simply about making donations. It is about empowering organizations already changing lives, equipping medical professionals with the tools they need, and giving more Filipino children the opportunity to grow up healthy enough to dream about the future.
