EXCLUSIVE: Tribeca Enterprises has appointed former BBC Studios, Gunpowder & Sky and FilmBuff exec Janet Brown to the newly created position of chief commercial officer.
The new post was created as a way of emphasizing the Tribeca Festival parent company’s year-round slate of live events and activities.
Brown will begin in her new role on Monday, reporting to Tribeca Enterprises CEO Rebecca Glashow, who was joined Tribeca last fall. The two execs overlapped at BBC Studios, where Brown was president of global content sales and Glashow held multiple senior exec posts.
As chief commercial officer, Brown will oversee Tribeca’s commercial strategy and enterprise-wide revenue operations. She will steer efforts to drive growth across Tribeca’s portfolio of businesses, including partnerships, distribution, studios, and business development.
The 25th annual edition of the Tribeca Festival wrapped in mid-June. Along with the fest, which was co-founded by Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, the company’s portfolio also includes Tribeca Studios, Tribeca Films, and production company m ss ng p eces. In 2019, James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems bought a majority stake in Tribeca Enterprises.
“Janet is a transformational leader with a remarkable track record of building businesses, unlocking new revenue opportunities, and creating innovative partnerships across the global media landscape,” Glashow said in a statement. “As Tribeca continues to expand across live experiences, content, branded entertainment, and global initiatives, Janet’s commercial expertise, entrepreneurial vision, and deep industry relationships will help accelerate our next phase of growth and create new opportunities for artists, audiences, brands, and partners.”
Brown joins Tribeca from BBC Studios, which she departed earlier this year after her role was relocated to the UK. She led content sales and investment strategy across all international markets outside the UK, helping to build BBC Studios into the top UK television distributor with more than $530 million in annual revenue. Her responsibilities spanned content licensing, co-productions, direct-to-consumer services, FAST channels, AVOD, home entertainment, and digital platforms. She also spearheaded transformational initiatives across multiple commercial functions.
Prior to BBC Studios, Brown served as EVP of Global Distribution and Commercial Operations at Gunpowder & Sky after it acquired FilmBuff, where Brown had been CEO. The indie film player was an early and successful digital-first distributor.
“My first love is independent film, and there are few names more synonymous with that than Tribeca,” Brown said. “We are a unique and powerful mix of cutting-edge storytellers, industry change agents, multimedia innovators, commercial deal-makers, and tenacious New Yorkers. I am thrilled to be joining Jane, Rebecca, and the rest of the team at such a pivotal and exciting time.”
