World number one Jannik Sinner was
tested but came through against big-serving 29-year-old world
number 48 Nuno Borges of Portugal in the second round of
Wimbledon Wednesday where the 24-year-old South Tyrolean
four-time major winner is looking to retain the title he won for
the first time last year.
Now the Italian will challenge American Jenson Brooksby (n.81
ATP) in the third round.
Sinner won in three sets 7-6 7-6 6-4 after Borges had served for
the second set.
"I'm very happy, the second set was tough, we have some things
to improve, we'll see," said Sinner after the match.
Sinner has come back after suffering a physical collapse
with dizziness and fatigue in the heat when on the verge of
victory over Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round
of the French Open in May.
Sinner who had been odds-on favourite at Roland Garros and was
one game away from beating Cerundolo before he ran out of gas
and suffered dizziness in the Paris heat, is also favourite to
retain his Wimbledon title due to the
injury-enforced absence of his great rival Carlos Alcaraz of
Spain.
Sinner had a barrage of tests at Milan's San Raffaele Hospital
recently and was cleared as fit to compete in South-West London,
possibly wearing a cooling vest between games.
Sinner has four grand slam titles to the seven claimed by
23-year-old Alcaraz, who missed Paris and is missing Wimbledon
with a wrist injury.
