
CALASIAO, PANGASINAN, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region I said the activity currently being undertaken within the Buaya River in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur, is a river restoration and flood control project through dredging by the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur.
In a statement posted on its social media page, DENR Region I said the project is being implemented by Fortuna Mining Corporation pursuant to its contract with the provincial government.

“The project (was) issued with clearance by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office I and has secured all other required permits, clearances, and authorizations,” the statement said.

The agency further assured the public that the transportation, handling, and final disposition of dredged materials generated from the project are subject to strict regulatory oversight and must be undertaken in full compliance with existing environmental laws, rules and regulations, permit conditions, and other applicable government issuances.

“The Department, together with the concerned implementing and regulatory agencies, continues to monitor the project’s implementation to ensure adherence to all environmental safeguards and legal requirements,” it said. /cb
