Authorities have confirmed that Salini Bay’s seawater has not been contaminated, following concerns sparked by videos circulating on social media.
The Environmental Health Directorate, working alongside the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), carried out an immediate site inspection after reports alleged that polluted water was flowing into the bay.
Their investigation found that the discharge was not sewage, pollution or any other form of environmental contamination.
Instead, officials confirmed it was reverse osmosis water originating from a nearby hotel. Reverse osmosis is a water treatment process used to purify water, and authorities stressed that the discharge does not indicate contamination of the bathing waters.
As things stand, the Environmental Health Directorate said there is no evidence of contamination at Salini Bay, meaning the public can continue swimming and enjoying the area with confidence.
The authorities also urged people to verify information through official sources before sharing unconfirmed claims online, warning that misleading posts can cause unnecessary concern.
Meanwhile, the Environmental Health Directorate said it will continue monitoring Malta’s bathing waters through its regular surveillance and inspection programmes to ensure they remain safe for the public.
