Malta Opens €1 Million Grant Scheme To Restore Historic Buildings

Owners of scheduled buildings outside Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs) can now apply for grants of up to €100,000 under a new €1 million restoration scheme launched by the Planning Authority.

Expressions of interest opened today and will remain open until 9th July, or until the available funds are exhausted. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The scheme offers grants of up to €100,000 for Grade 1 scheduled buildings and up to €50,000 for Grade 2 scheduled buildings. In cases where a property has multiple owners, each co-owner may receive up to €15,000, while joint applications may qualify for the maximum grant available.

The funding is intended to support restoration and conservation works on scheduled properties located outside UCAs, helping preserve buildings of historical and architectural significance across Malta and Gozo.

Eligible works include the restoration of façades, conservation of stonework, repairs to traditional timber apertures and other restoration projects approved by the Planning Authority.

Property owners must first submit an Expression of Interest through the Planning Authority’s online portal before providing the required documentation detailing the proposed works.

The Planning Authority said the initiative builds on previous restoration schemes and aims to encourage more owners to invest in preserving Malta’s built heritage while easing the financial burden of conservation projects.
