Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) is warning that Democrats are “taking out their own” by supporting democratic socialist candidates in primary races across the country.
Boebert accused the party of “wanting true socialism, which inevitably will be communism” during an interview with NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo on Wednesday evening.
“I promise you, this next Congress, they will push harder than ever for these things,” the Colorado Republican added.
President Trump has also slammed democratic socialist candidates as “communist,” but the two political viewpoints represent distinct goals. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) defines the goal of democratic socialism as replacing capitalism with “a system where ordinary people have a real voice” in political decisions.
Boebert specifically cited Milat Kiros’s recent win in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District Democratic primary. The 29-year-old democratic socialist ousted Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette, who has been serving in the House since 1997.
Kiros has pledged not to support any Democratic leader who “takes corporate PAC money” and has received criticism for her views on Israel.
“Milat is not lying. She wants socialism. She wants more of it, a lot of it, and she’s very proud to say it,” Boebert told NewsNation. “And so now the pretend-to-be-normal Democrats that people like myself and Gabe Evans in Colorado are running against, well, this is their party, and this is what we are running against as well.”
Kiros was backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and the DSA. Sanders, who has backed several democratic socialist challengers to Democratic incumbents this midterm cycle, celebrated her win on Wednesday.
“The tide is turning. Americans are tired of status quo politics,” he wrote on social media. “They want representatives in Congress who will stand up to oligarchy and fight for working families.”
The victory follows wins from democratic socialist candidates in two New York House primaries. Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier came out on top in their respective contests last week, with the support of New York City’s democratic socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani.
In Los Angeles, DSA member Nithya Raman secured her spot early last month for the city’s November mayoral race against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass (D). Additionally, in Washington, D.C., progressive Democrat Janeese Lewis George is poised to replace the city’s outgoing mayor, Muriel Bowser (D).
