Former “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd said Wednesday that President Trump’s upcoming midterm convention will help Democrats in the run-up to November.
“Oh, I think the Democrats will help pay for this convention. I think they would love to see this race as nationalized as possible — midterm elections, the more nationalized they are, the worse that is for the incumbent party. History will show that. Recent history shows that,” Todd told CNN’s Erica Hill on “CNN News Central.”
“So, doing this the way that Trump wants to do it, making it about him, making it about you’re either with Trump or you’re against Trump. That’s the frame, frankly, Democrats would love to go into the general election with,” he added, in comments highlighted by Mediaite.
On Tuesday, Trump announced a Republican “midterm convention” in Dallas later this year.
“BIG NEWS! For the first time ever, the Republican Party will hold a MIDTERM CONVENTION. It will be in Dallas, Texas — One of my favorite places in the World. It will be fantastic! It has never been done before, and will be a truly Historic Event,” Trump said on Truth Social.
“We are going to celebrate the GREAT AMERICAN COMEBACK, and the incredible successes of the American People who transformed our Country through the America First Agenda,” he added.
Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters said in a statement emailed to The Hill on Tuesday that “this historic Midterm Convention will highlight President Trump’s many accomplishments and unwavering commitment to restoring America.”
“This convention will be a Trumpapalooza, where we will showcase the America First agenda, which has delivered the largest tax cut in history and made communities safer,” he added.
Trump and the GOP are facing a rocky road to the midterms, with Americans largely having a negative perspective on issues like the president’s job performance, the war in Iran and the economy as November nears.
The Hill has reached out to the Republican National Committee for comment.
