Influencer Nara Smith revealed on Wednesday, July 1, that her 2-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with cancer “late last year.”
In an Instagram reel, the Homemade cookbook author shared that they took their daughter, Whimsy Lou, to the emergency room when they noticed something suspicious, but “they didn’t quite know what to make of it.”
“When we took her into our pediatrician, I just remember him going really quiet and calm,” she said. “My heart dropped in that moment. I don’t know whether it was my gut telling me something or just a mom’s intuition, but the first thing that I felt was she has cancer.”
Smith and her husband, Lucky Blue, were then advised by their pediatrician to take their daughter into the nearest children’s hospital to take some tests.
“After a lot of X-rays, ultrasounds and finally a biopsy, they immediately called us and said that she had cancer,” she said, adding that the doctor informed them that the cancer had spread and they needed to start chemo treatments immediately.
The influencer, however, did not disclose the type of cancer Whimsy has and the update to her condition and treatments.
In the video, she also shared that speaking with other parents and families facing similar situations has helped her cope and ease the feeling of isolation following the diagnosis of her daughter.
“All of that combined really brought me a lot of comfort and alleviated the feeling of loneliness for me,” she said. “Processing this and navigating all of this as a family has been really hard.”
She added that the current situation is why she has been posting less on social media, especially as she has also been navigating postpartum.
“Having found all of this out and navigating this while postpartum, also loving and caring for our other kids at home, also being in the hospital with Whimsy a lot and balancing work on top of that has been really challenging.”
“Some days are a little easier, some days are really hard, and all I can do is try my best and show up in all those areas in the best way that I can,” she said.
Smith hopes that publicly sharing their situation will help others who are experiencing similar circumstances.
“We wanted to share this to hopefully bring someone else that comfort or even incentivize you to go get something checked out that you’ve been avoiding,” she said.
The cookbook author and her husband share four children: Rumble Honey, Slim Easy, Whimsy Lou, and Fawnie Golden.
Smith is known for her cooking videos and family-focused lifestyle content with millions of followers in different social media platforms.
