The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in partnership with Interferry, has completed the second module of the Ferry Safety Development Programme (FSDP), reinforcing efforts to improve technical competence and safety standards among ferry operators across Africa.
The programme, described as Africa’s first structured professional development initiative for the ferry sector, focused on seamanship, equipping participants with practical knowledge in ropes and knots, mooring and anchoring, as well as deck maintenance.
The June training combined self-paced learning, virtual mentoring, expert-led discussions and practical field exercises designed to strengthen participants’ operational skills and promote safer ferry services on inland waterways.
A key highlight of the module was an “Ask the Expert” virtual session held on June 17, during which Interferry mentor and Vice President of Marine Operations at Northumberland Ferries Limited, Jeff Joyce, shared insights on seamanship, maritime safety, ferry operations and leadership. Participants also engaged in interactive discussions on global best practices in the ferry industry.
The practical component of the training took place on June 24 at Sea School, Apapa, under the coordination of Engr. Ukeme Sunday and facilitated by Sea School Coordinator, Dr. Ekundayo, alongside seven experienced maritime instructors. The 50 participants were divided into three groups for hands-on exercises covering rope identification, rope handling, knot tying, line management and the practical application of knots commonly used in ferry operations.
The exercises were designed to reinforce teamwork, operational efficiency and onboard safety by exposing participants to real-life working conditions and practical seamanship techniques.
Speaking on the importance of the programme, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the practical sessions complement the programme’s virtual learning and mentoring components by providing participants with valuable field experience and exposure to international operational standards.
LASWA expressed appreciation to Lagos Ferry Services Company Limited (LAGFERRY) and Thesaurus Bay Limited for providing ferries for the practical training, while also acknowledging Interferry for sponsoring the programme. The authority also commended Mrs. Shari Corrigan, Jeff Joyce, Dr. Ekundayo, the management of Sea School, Apapa, and the Lagos State Government for their support in advancing maritime safety and professional capacity development.
The 18-month Ferry Safety Development Programme is designed to strengthen technical skills, operational excellence, leadership and safety culture while developing a new generation of ferry professionals across Africa. With 16 months remaining, the initiative will move into its third module in July, focusing on ferry safety, emergency preparedness, risk management and international safety best practices as part of efforts to enhance safety standards on the continent’s inland waterways.
