Kathmandu. Claims circulating widely on social media that Kumar Thapa Magar, popularly known as "Nepali Bro," has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his wife are misleading.
Posts shared on Facebook and TikTok claim that Kumar has already received a life sentence for stabbing his wife, Nepal Army Subedar Ishwori Bhujel, to death on a road in Paiyutar, Tarakeshwor Municipality-6, on June 5, 2026.
However, an investigation by the TechPana Fact Check Desk found that Kumar has not been sentenced. The District Government Attorney's Office has only filed a charge sheet seeking life imprisonment, while the case is still under judicial process and no verdict has been delivered.
Claim
On July 2 at 7:37 am, the Facebook page 'Laligurash Media Network' shared a post claiming that "Nepali Bro" had been sentenced to life imprisonment. The image attached to the post stated, "Nepali Bro sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife."
The original caption also claimed that Kumar Thapa Magar had been sentenced to life imprisonment. At 8:37 am, the page edited the caption, but it continued to state that he had received a life sentence. By then, the post had already garnered more than 1,700 reactions.
Later, at 9:15 am, the page edited the caption for a second time, changing it to state that life imprisonment had been sought against Kumar Thapa Magar for killing his wife. However, the image accompanying the post was not updated and continued to falsely state that he had already been sentenced to life imprisonment.
By 1:43 pm on the same day, the post had received more than 4,500 reactions. Check the post, archive link, and screenshot.
Investigation
On July 2 at 9:20 am, a Facebook page named 'Royal Online TV' also posted that Nepali Bro had been sentenced to life imprisonment. The caption stated, "Nepali Bro sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his wife." Check the post and screenshot.
Later, on the same day at 9:56 am, another Facebook page, 'Routine of Hetauda,' published a similar claim with the caption, "Nepali Bro sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his wife." Check the post and screenshot.
Likewise, Facebook user 'Manoj Pathak Sanu' uploaded a short video claiming that Kumar Thapa, who was arrested for killing his wife, had been sentenced to life imprisonment. Check the video.
After these claims spread widely on social media, the TechPana Fact Check Desk conducted an advanced Google search using keywords including "Nepali Bro life imprisonment," "Kumar Thapa life imprisonment," and "wife murder life imprisonment."
The search found multiple news reports stating that a charge sheet had been filed seeking life imprisonment, not that Kumar had already been sentenced.
On July 1, Naya Patrika published a report titled, "Request for life imprisonment against Nepali Bro…"
Similarly, Nepal Press reported the issue on July 2, 2026 under the headline, "Case filed requesting life imprisonment against 'Nepali Bro,' what does the charge sheet say?"
Ratopati also reported on July 1 under the headline, "Wife Murder Case: Life Imprisonment Demanded Against Four People Including 'Nepali Bro.'"
Likewise, TechPana published a report on July 3 titled, "TikTok Personality 'Nepali Bro' Charged Along With Three Others in Murder of Wife Ishwori Bhujel"
Since all these reports referred to a demand for life imprisonment rather than an actual sentence, the Fact Check Desk searched for the official charge sheet.
The investigation found that on June 30, the District Government Attorney's Office filed a charge sheet at the Kathmandu District Court, seeking punishment against Kumar Thapa Magar, also known as "Nepali Bro," under Section 177(2) of the Muluki Criminal Code, 2074.
After confirming that the government attorney had sought life imprisonment, the Fact Check Desk searched for any court verdict in the case.
However, no record of a judgment or final verdict was found at the Kathmandu District Court.
The Fact Check Desk also spoke with Somkanta Bhandari, chief of the District Government Attorney's Office, who dismissed the viral claims. "It is almost impossible for a case to be decided within two days of being filed. If reports claim that Kumar Thapa, also known as Nepali Bro, has already been sentenced to life imprisonment, they are misleading," Bhandari said.
He explained that criminal cases go through a lengthy judicial process, making it highly unlikely for a verdict to be issued immediately after a charge sheet is filed.
