
MANILA, Philippines — Over 1,000 fisherfolk in General Santos City benefited from the Department of Labor and Employment’s (Dole) Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (Tupad) program, where P9.8 million in wages were distributed following a deadly earthquake that struck parts of Mindanao, the agency said on Friday.
According to Dole,1,040 beneficiaries completed 20 days of work under the Tupad Tuloy Pamalakaya program, where they were assigned to support fisheries-related operations and facility maintenance.

“Of the total beneficiaries, 559 were assigned to the PFDA General Santos Fish Port Complex, where they carried out maintenance, drainage cleaning, wastewater management, and other rehabilitation activities,” the LTFRB said in a press release.

“Meanwhile, 481 beneficiaries deployed by BFAR Region XII assisted in tuna handline fishing, catch handling, post-harvest operations, logistics, and fisheries sustainability initiatives,” it added.
Labor secretary Francis Tolentino then affirmed the government’s commitment to provide assistance and job opportunities to vulnerable workers after a magnitude 8.7 earthquake affected livelihoods.

“Asahan niyo po na ang Dole Region XII, sa pamumuno ni [Regional Director Imelda Gatinao], ay talagang nakatuon sa inyo. The reason why I’m here is to showcase the convergence of various government agencies… Ang pamahalaan ay nasa likod ninyo. Subalit, kailangan magtulung-tulong po tayo,” Tolentino said in the same press release.

During the release of Tupad wages, Tolentino also awarded the Certificate of Technical and Vocational Education Training Program Registration for its Aquaculture NC II program to Eastern Aqua Ventures Inc. for expanding training opportunities to future aquaculture workers. /jpv

HELP MINDANAO EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS
