A major marine cleanup along Malta’s south coast has removed 61 large bags of waste, including plastics, polystyrene, ropes, jerry cans and pipes from the waters around Marsaxlokk, Delimara, Blue Grotto and Filfla.
The Coast is Clear Foundation said the initiative, funded by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, also recorded 915 plastic bottles collected in a single day across the cleanup sites.
The campaign focused not only on popular coastal areas such as Blue Grotto but also on the ecologically sensitive waters surrounding Filfla.
However, volunteers also made a sobering discovery, finding several dead shearwater seabirds among the marine litter.
Describing the find as a reminder of humanity’s impact on the marine environment, the Foundation urged continued efforts to protect Malta’s coastline and seas.
The organisation also thanked the Marsaxlokk Local Council and the Alfred Mizzi Foundation for supporting the initiative.
