The capital's water entity is investigating after raw sewage was pumped out close to the southern Wellington shoreline.
Tiaki Wai said the short outfall pipe discharged untreated wastewater into Tarakena Bay between 10.30 and 11 on Friday morning.
The cause of the discharge is unknown but investigations are underway.
Tiaki Wai said contaminated water was likely to be travelling around the coastline. It advised people to stay out of the water between Ōwhiro Bay and Breaker Bay until Monday.
The Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant has been pumping untreated but screened waste about one kilometre into Cook Strait since its catastrophic failure in February.
