Egypt beat Australia on penalties on Friday to advance to the last 16 at the World Cup for the first time.

They claimed the shootout 4-2 after Australia skipper Harry Soutar and Lucas Herrington fluffed their shots.

“It is history," said Egypt skipper Mohamed Salah who converted Egypt's third penalty following the 1-1 draw.

"I told the boys before the game: 'Guys, this is the biggest game you could play in your life, so just enjoy it. Don’t let the pressure get to you and not enjoy the moment.'"

The 34-year-old added: "I am glad we managed to win the game."

Egypt take lead in Texas

Egypt took the lead in the first half in Dallas through Emam Ashour's header.

It was another header that levelled up the game.

Aidan O'Neill swung over a free-kick from the left wing and Mohamed Hany put through his own net for the second time at the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Egypt finish strongly

Australia dominated possession after the equaliser. But it was Egypt who finished the second half more strongly as nerves crept into Australia's game.

Mo Touré conceded a corner kick in stoppage time with a misdirected pass.

From it, Salah sent over a cross that Ramy Rabia headed towards the top left hand corner of the goal.

Patrick Beach, playing for Australia for only the second time, pulled off a spectacular save to keep his team in contention.

The 22-year-old was replaced for the penalty shootout by Mathew Ryan.

But the 34-year-old was a spectator as all four of Egypt's penalty takers outwitted him.

On 7 July in Atlanta, Egypt will play the winner of Friday night's last 32 tie between holders Argentina and debutants Cape Verde for a place in the quarter-final.
