Kano gov to EFCC: Guard against fertiliser hoarding

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to guard against the hoarding or diversion of subsidised fertiliser being distributed by the state government.

The governor sought the anti-graft agencies’ support on Thursday while flagging off the distribution of 150 truckloads of subsidised fertiliser to farmers across the 44 local government areas of the state.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa.

Yusuf said the involvement of the anti-graft agencies was aimed at ensuring that the fertiliser reached genuine farmers and eliminating diversion, hoarding and other sharp practices.

“We have invited the EFCC and the ICPC to monitor this exercise because we want complete transparency and accountability. The fertiliser must get to the genuine farmers it is meant for.

“This intervention is designed to reduce the cost of farming, increase agricultural productivity and strengthen food security across Kano State. We will not allow anyone to sabotage this noble initiative,” the governor was quoted as saying.

Monitor fertiliser distribution, Kano gov tells EFCC, ICPC

Yusuf charged the 44 local government chairmen to conduct the distribution exercise with honesty, fairness and accountability, stressing that they would be held responsible for the process in their respective councils.

“I expect every local government chairman to ensure fairness and transparency in the distribution. This is a programme for the benefit of our farmers, and nobody should exploit it for personal gain,” he said.

The governor also warned that anyone found diverting the fertiliser or frustrating the programme would face the full weight of the law.

“Let me make it clear that anyone caught diverting these fertilisers or engaging in any act capable of undermining the exercise will be dealt with in accordance with the law. We will not tolerate corruption or sabotage,” he added.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the prudent management of public resources, describing agriculture as a critical sector for Kano’s economic growth and food security.

He said the fertiliser distribution formed part of the state’s broader efforts to support farmers, boost crop production and cushion the impact of rising farming costs.
