The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Friday formally unveiled a retired civil servant, Bolakale Kawu as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
The party also presented the Presiding Pastor of Oasis of Wisdom Bible Church, Ilorin, Cornelius Fawenu, as Kawu’s running mate in fulfilment of its Muslim-Christian promise.
The unveiling ceremony, held at the party’s state secretariat in Ilorin, attracted party leaders, stakeholders, members and supporters from across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Kwara PDP Chairman, Isa Adamu, described the unveiling as a major milestone in the party’s preparations for the 2027 governorship election.
Adamu said Kawu nominated Fawenu as his running mate after extensive consultations with party leaders and stakeholders across the state, following a rigorous selection process involving four qualified nominees.
According to him, Fawenu emerged as the preferred choice because of his competence, integrity, experience and longstanding contributions to community development, peacebuilding and humanitarian service.
“Fawenu’s emergence reflects the values of competence, integrity and selfless service that our party stands for,” Adamu said.
The chairman also commended Fawenu for withdrawing from the contest for the Kwara South senatorial ticket in the interest of the party.
“His decision to step down demonstrates loyalty, discipline and selfless leadership, which are qualities the party cherishes,” he added.

Adamu disclosed that the party had commenced the constitutional process of notifying its national leadership of the vacancy created by Fawenu’s withdrawal from the senatorial race.
He reiterated the PDP’s readiness to provide what he described as purposeful leadership in the state.
“Our administration will prioritise security, economic growth, quality education, youth and women empowerment, agriculture and transparent governance. We urge all party members to remain united and committed to securing victory in the 2027 general election,” he said.
In his acceptance speech, Fawenu thanked God and the leadership of the party for the confidence reposed in him.
He also expressed appreciation to the party’s leader, Bukola Saraki, Kawu, the state chairman, the State Working Committee, the Council of Elders and party members across the state for their support.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kwara State, Bishop STG Adewole, represented by Rev. Yemi Adepoju, urged PDP members and residents of the state to remain committed to peace, unity and responsible leadership as preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum.
Adepoju called on political actors and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns and shun actions capable of undermining the state’s peaceful atmosphere.
“Political actors and their supporters should conduct their campaigns peacefully while placing the interest of Kwara State above personal and partisan considerations,” he said.
