Magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolts waters off Sarangani — Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck off Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, on Saturday morning, state seismologists said.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 offshore Sarangani and magnitude 6.5 offshore Davao Occidental earthquakes that struck in June 2026.

The tectonic earthquake occurred at 10:21 a.m. Its epicenter was located 38 kilometers southwest of Balut Island at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Intensity III in Malapatan, Sarangani

Intensity II in Kiamba and Malungon in Sarangani; Tupi, T’Boli in South Cotabato

Intensity I in Maitum and Maasim (Sarangani) and the City of General Santos.

The state seismology bureau said no damage and no additional aftershocks are expected from this quake. /das
