
MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit the waters off Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental, on Saturday morning, state seismologists said.
The earthquake was an aftershock of the massive M7.8 offshore Sarangani and M6.5 offshore Davao Occidental earthquakes that struck in June 2026, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The tectonic earthquake occurred at 10:21 a.m. Its epicenter was located 38 kilometers southwest of Balut Island at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The following instrumental intensities were recorded:
Intensity III in Malapatan, Sarangani
Intensity II in Kiamba and Malungon in Sarangani; Tupi, T’Boli in South Cotabato
Intensity I in Maitum and Maasim (Sarangani) and the City of General Santos.
The state seismology bureau said no damage and no additional aftershocks are expected from this quake. /das
