On Friday, fire gutted a petroleum storage tank at the Bono Energy Terminal in Apapa, Lagos, while a gas truck exploded in a separate incident along the Owode Elede axis of Ikorodu road, prompting swift emergency responses that averted what the authorities described as potentially catastrophic disasters.
The fire at the Bono Energy terminal, located within the Ibru Jetty complex along the Apapa–Oworonshoki expressway, was reported at 12:04pm and involved a five-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank.
Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, drawn from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu and Isolo Fire Stations, arrived at the scene at 12:16pm and immediately commenced operation.
Working in collaboration with emergency response teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities, the firefighters successfully contained the blaze and completely extinguished it by 1:54pm, preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining storage tanks and other critical infrastructure.
The comptroller-general of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said no casualty was recorded, adding that the cause of the fire was yet to be determined and remained under investigation.
In a separate incident, a six-tyre mini gas truck developed a mechanical fault while travelling inward Ikorodu along the Owode Elede corridor.
Emergency officials discovered that compressed gas was leaking from the vehicle before it ignited, resulting in an explosion and fire around the truck.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its Rescue and Recovery Team, in conjunction with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, swiftly brought the situation under control, preventing the blaze from escalating.
