Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala pulled off another career-defining victory after upsetting defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland, 7-6, 6-2, in the third round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.
The win booked Eala a place in the Round of 16 at the All-England Club, while her parents and tennis legend Martina Navratilova watched, surrounded by an adoring crowd.
The victory extended Eala’s historic Wimbledon run. She had already become the first Filipina in the Open Era to reach the tournament’s third round after overcoming Australia’s Maya Joint in a three-set comeback during the previous round.

“I’m going to the second week of a Slam,” Eala said in the post-match press conference. “For someone who grew up in the Philippines…this is everything. This is one of the biggest matches of my life for sure and this is my dream court.”
Alexandra Eala’s dream run
She thanked the crowd for their support and commended Swiatek for being “a phenomenal player and a really nice person.”
Facing the reigning Wimbledon champion, Eala displayed maturity beyond her years, capitalizing on key opportunities while staying composed during crucial moments of the match.
Eala won the first set after a thrilling tiebreaker that stretched to 11-9. The player who scores seven first, leading by two, wins the tiebreaker: the scores these two reached reflected how tight the contest was. That first set stretched 28 minutes longer than the Wimbledon finals in 2025, when Swiatek defeated the American Amanda Anisimova, 6-0, 6-0, in about 57 minutes.
Tough day in the office for Iga Swiatek
The Filipina then earned a double break on Swiatek’s first two serves in the second set, taking a 3-0 lead before the Polish star made it to the scoreboard.
Eala was serving for the match with a 5-2 lead when Swiatek had a chance to break her serve.
But Eala held steady until she had her first match point. Swiatek saved that.
They went to deuce six times in the longest game of the match, as Swiatek kept the pressure up and fought to extend it.
Eala converted her third match point and went down on the grass, weeping in joy.
Before this Wimbledon match, Eala and Swiatek had met across the net twice and won one match each. Eala beat Swiatek in straight sets in the Miami Open quarterfinals in March 2025.
One month after that, Swiatek returned the favor and defeated the Filipina in three sets in the Madrid Open.
Eala now advances to the Round of 16, where she will face Jasmine Paolini and look to continue her dream run and become the first Filipino player to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals in the Open Era.
