
MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte on Sunday said she prayed for the return of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently held at The Hague ahead of his trial for crimes against humanity.
The vice president issued a statement noting that she lit candles and prayed for national peace during a visit to the Archdiocesan Shrine of St. Vincent Ferrer in Bogo City, Cebu.
“We also prayed for the return of former President Rodrigo Duterte to our country,” the vice president said.

Duterte’s statement came a day before the Senate is set to convene as an impeachment court to begin proceedings on the impeachment complaint against her.
Meanwhile, Duterte said she also prayed for Bogo City’s continued recovery from the damage caused by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the area in 2025.

Rodrigo Duterte is facing three counts of crimes against humanity in connection with his administration’s bloody war on drugs, which killed at least 6,000 people, according to government records, and more than 30,000, based on estimates by human rights groups. The reported death toll includes children as young as 3 years old.
