Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital is accelerating digital infrastructure development, encouraging greater investment by telecommunications operators, and expanding internet access in remote areas to achieve a national average internet speed of 100 Mbps.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria said that quality internet access has become a basic need for the public. Thus, the government is targeting an average national internet speed of 100 Mbps within the next two years.
"We are committed to reaching 100 Mbps in approximately the next two years, evenly distributed and at increasingly affordable prices," Patria remarked in a statement on Sunday.
Furthermore, he conveyed the government's efforts in ensuring equal connectivity development across the country, while supporting the growth of the digital economy.
He said that improvement in connectivity quality is part of the ministry's strategy through the vision "Connected, Growing, and Secured" or Terhubung, Tumbuh, dan Terjaga.
Patria views that enhanced digital infrastructure will serve as the foundation for expanding the digital economy, boosting productivity, and widening access to digital public services.
To achieve this target, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Technology is encouraging telecommunications operators to expand network investment by extending fiber optic infrastructure, strengthening fixed broadband services, and leveraging satellite technology to improve connectivity in underserved areas.
He emphasized that expanding equitable internet access remains a key government priority, noting that areas without signal are still being reported, including in parts of Java.
"We must close the remaining infrastructure and connectivity gaps, including addressing areas that still experience blank spots," he pointed out.
Alongside government efforts to develop infrastructure in underdeveloped areas, network capacity is being strengthened through a combination of fiber optics, fixed broadband, and satellite connectivity to improve internet reliability.
He then acknowledged the ever-growing public demand for connectivity, noting that disaster response has shown telecommunications restoration to be one of the most urgent needs after emergency aid.
"When disasters occur, people ask not only for food assistance but also for mobile signal restoration. This shows that connectivity has become an essential part of daily life," he remarked.
