MANILA, Philippines—There’s no question about CJ Cansino’s offense.
But Meralco coach Luigi Trillo knows that his swingman still has a lot to improve on when it comes to the other end of the floor.

“He’s very coachable. I remember when I got mad at him and some players have ego, but CJ doesn’t have that. Can he improve defensively? I think he can,” he told the Inquirer.

“He’s gained 20 pounds in the offseason. I don’t think people noticed that. That alone, shows how committed he is.”
Cansino’s defensive flaws showed during Meralco’s Commissioner’s Cup semifinals series against TNT as he was tasked to guard Tropang 5G hitters Jordan Heading and Roger Pogoy, who wreaked havoc on offense.
Trillo believes Cansino, at just 26 years old, has what it takes to become a much better defender and prove it in the season-ending conference beginning next week.

“He still needs to know how to win in the league, and that’s where some of the vets come in, but he’s been amazing. For him to be respected and to be a leader, he really needs to elevate his defense. Once he starts to get his own there, then he gets to be the voice of the locker room,” Trillo said.
“Right now, he’s in line with the vets and I’m very proud of what he’s done but sky’s the limit for this guy.”
