
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has yet to finalize a successor to Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., who is set to retire on July 20, Malacañang said Monday.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the President is looking for a “trustworthy, patriotic, God-fearing and hardworking” military chief who prioritizes the welfare of the nation.
Asked whether Marcos already has a shortlist of candidates, Castro said no names have been finalized.

“I still don’t have anything to give you if that kind of information already exists,” she said.
The Palace official then listed the qualities the next Armed Forces chief that Marcos is looking for must have.
“First of all, of course, trustworthy, patriotic, God-fearing, and hardworking, and someone who prioritizes the welfare of the nation,” she said.

Brawner is a member and the salutatorian of the Philippine Military Academy Makatao Class of 1989. He became the Armed Forces’ 60th chief of staff after his appointment in July 2023.
The 58-year-old soldier was born and raised in Baguio City to the late Court of Appeals Presiding Justice Romeo Brawner Sr. and the late University of the Philippines Baguio professor Lenora Fe Brawner, who was among the original faculty members of the Baguio campus. /dl
