Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Defense supports state-owned defense manufacturer PT Pindad to expand its ammunition plants across nation.
"In the future, PT Pindad’s ammunition production facilities are planned to be built on other major islands, so that defense logistics support is not only concentrated in one region," Head of the Ministry's Defense Information Bureau, Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, said in a statement received here on Monday.
Sirait said the initiative is aimed at enabling the factories to produce and distribute ammunition logistics quickly to military units stationed across the country.
As a result, the presence of the plants will directly support the Indonesian Military (TNI) in safeguarding the country's sovereignty in various regions.
Beyond the defense aspect, the ammunition plant construction is also expected to strengthen PT Pindad's self-reliance as the country's domestic defense industry.

The plan will also allow PT Pindad to maximise its role as the TNI's main ammunition producer.
"Strategically, this development is intended to strengthen the national ammunition production capacity and reduce dependence on foreign supplies," Sirait noted.
Ammunition plants have already been established in several regions, he added, including South Papua, while the latest facility is being built in Batulicin, South Kalimantan. PT Pindad will use around 30 hectares of land for the Batulicin ammunition plant.
"The selection of Batulicin was made based on various technical and strategic considerations, including land availability, regional access, potential infrastructure support, as well as South Kalimantan's strategic position in strengthening the national defense industry," Sirait said.
With the plant development, Sirait expressed optimism that Indonesia's domestic defense industry would become stronger and better able to support the country's defense capabilities.
