The Rotary Club of Albufeira will celebrate its 55th anniversary on Saturday, July 11, marking more than five decades of community service since the club was founded on June 16, 1971.
The commemorative event will take place at the club’s headquarters in Albufeira and will bring together Rotary members, past and present district governors, representatives from Rotary clubs in Portugal and abroad, public officials, businesses, institutional partners and members of the local community.
Over the past 55 years, the Rotary Club of Albufeira has played an active role in supporting local initiatives across a wide range of areas, including education, youth development, healthcare, social welfare, culture and community development.
Among its flagship projects are university scholarships awarded in partnership with the Portuguese Rotary Foundation, Albufeira Municipality and other organisations, helping students pursue higher education. The club has also provided assistance to local families and charitable institutions, while promoting leadership and personal development through successive editions of RYLA Algarve (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards).
In addition to these long-running programmes, the club has organised numerous community service initiatives designed to encourage active citizenship and improve the lives of residents.
This year’s anniversary programme will also include the second Solidarity Paella fundraising event and the traditional Handover Ceremony, during which the outgoing leadership passes responsibility to the incoming Rotary president for the 2026-2027 Rotary year.
The celebrations coincide with the start of a new Rotary International year under the presidential theme “Create Lasting Impact”, a motto that the Albufeira club says reflects its ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable, meaningful projects that benefit the local community.
Several symbolic moments are also planned during the evening. A former Rotary scholarship recipient, who has since become a distinguished teacher and visual artist, will officially join the club as a new member, while a former Rotarian will also return to the organisation, highlighting what the club describes as its continued renewal and growth.
Organisers say the anniversary is intended not only as a celebration of the club’s history but also as a tribute to the generations of volunteers whose dedication has shaped its work since 1971.
“More than celebrating a historic milestone, this occasion honours everyone who has contributed to the club’s journey while renewing our commitment to serving the community and creating a positive impact for future generations,” the club said.
The evening begins with a reception for guests at 7pm, followed by the official ceremony at 7.30pm, at the Rotary Club of Albufeira headquarters on Estrada de Vale Pedras. Solidarity contribution: €30 per participant.
Founded on the Rotary principle of “Service Above Self”, the Rotary Club of Albufeira remains one of the Algarve’s longest-established civic organisations, continuing to support educational opportunities, community projects and charitable initiatives that make a lasting difference across the region.
