
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Singapore reiterated their commitment to uphold freedom of navigation in the Strait of Malacca and to strengthen maritime security, including search and rescue cooperation and anti-piracy efforts in the strategic waterway.
"Indonesia and Singapore are neighboring countries bordering the Strait of Malacca, and it is imperative for us to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Malacca for all parties," Prabowo said during the joint press statement with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the Merdeka Palace on Monday.
Indonesia and Singapore agreed to strengthen cooperation in maintaining peace and security in the Strait of Malacca, is of strategic importance for the two countries, including by protecting it from pollution and security threats, he stated.
Prabowo said that besides Singapore, Indonesia will also work with other countries bordering the Strait of Malacca, namely Malaysia and Thailand, to ensure freedom of navigation on the waterway for all parties. Moreover, the free passage rights were protected by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Seas (UNCLOS), he added.
The president said that the commitment for the Strait of Malacca reflected Indonesia's determination to be a good partner for its neighbor, including Singapore.
"I have personally proven the commitment for decades that Singapore and Indonesia must be good partners for each other," Prabowo stressed.
On the same occasion, PM Wong stated that Indonesia and Singapore agreed on the importance of the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Malacca.
PM Wong also confirmed that he and President Prabowo agreed to work within their respective capacities to ensure a safe and open Strait of Malacca for all.
President Prabowo Subianto on Monday received PM Wong at the Merdeka Palace for the annual leader's retreat. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed cooperation in various sectors, including economy, energy, and education, as well as regional and global issues.
