Etna eruption closes US base's air space

17 commercial flights diverted from Catania to Palermo

A fresh eruption from Mt Etna on

Monday prompted the closure of the air space above the US air

force base at Sigonella in Sicily.

The sky-high ash plume spouted from Europe's highest active

volcano also led to 17 arriving flights being diverted from

Catania to Palermo.
