Jakarta (ANTARA) -
Singaporean Prime Minister (PM) Lawrence Wong reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening cooperation with Indonesia, particularly in the fields of energy, human resource development, and defense institutional relations, during the Indonesia-Singapore Annual Leaders' Retreat.
PM Wong stated that he and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto agreed to expand cooperation to create more opportunities for the people of both nations, bolster resilience, and enhance the competitiveness of both Indonesia and Singapore.
"The commitment to elevating our cooperation is reflected in the various agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) we signed today," Lawrence Wong said in a joint press statement here on Monday.
He explained that the energy sector is one of the main focuses of the partnership, as recent developments in the Middle East underscore the importance of energy independence and the diversification of energy sources.
Singapore recognizes Indonesia's vast potential in developing new and renewable energy. Hence, the two countries will broaden their collaboration, which includes solar energy projects in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, and the implementation of cross-border electricity trading.
Beyond the energy sector, the two leaders also agreed to foster closer people-to-people ties, including a student exchange program between Singaporean schools and Indonesia’s Garuda School.
"Finally, President Prabowo and I also agreed to strengthen institutional ties between our two countries. Specifically, the strong relationship between the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Indonesian Military (TNI) maintains the mutual trust between our nations," he remarked.
He also expressed his appreciation for President Subianto's contributions to deepening military relations between Indonesia and Singapore during his previous tenure as Indonesian Minister of Defense between 2019-2024.
Earlier in the day, President Subianto welcomed PM Wong at the Merdeka Palace for the Indonesia-Singapore Annual Leaders' Retreat.
During the meeting, Indonesia and Singapore agreed on 26 cooperation documents, comprising 18 government-to-government agreements and MoUs, as well as eight business-to-business agreements.
