The Hong Kong Observatory issued a red rainstorm warning on Monday night, following warnings about heavy rain and serious flooding in areas of Wan Chai.
The red signal – the middle level in a three-tier warning system – was issued at 9.45pm. An amber warning was earlier issued at 7.05pm.
A red warning means heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 50mm in an hour, and is likely to continue.
The Observatory said more than 70mm of hourly rainfall had fallen or was expected to fall in the Wan Chai area.
Residents in the vicinity are advised to take necessary precautions to avoid possible flood damage.
