A total of 17 Syrian nationals have been detained after police inspections in Marsaskala found they were residing in Malta irregularly.
The operation was carried out by the Malta Police Force together with officials from the Detention Services Agency, who conducted inspections across several areas of the locality.
All 17 individuals were taken to a detention centre, where they will remain while the necessary administrative and legal procedures are completed for their return to the country where they are legally entitled to reside.
Police said similar targeted inspections will continue across Malta to tackle irregular immigration, labour law abuses and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
Authorities added that Malta remains committed to fulfilling its national and international obligations while enforcing its laws with full respect for fundamental human rights.
